Punta Gorda And Garifuna East End

Offer Image
Explore Roatan's quiet East End with a local fusion of indigenous culture and a sightseeing tour that is sure to leave you with a true understanding of Roatan's island life.

Experience a real view of Punta Gorda by meeting the local Garifuna people. Garifunas are the descendants of an Afro-indigenous population from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent; exiled to the Honduran coast in the eighteenth century. The Garifunas very much keep their culture alive through the practice of drum and dance ceremonies. Sit back and watch as they perform a traditional dance and learn about the historical meaning and importance of these traditions and what they mean to the Garifuna today. You'll also see how they prepare the crispy typical yucca bread, a treasure of the Garifuna tradition, called "Kazabe." After making the Kazabe, you'll have an opportunity to try it for yourself quickly realizing why the Garifuna hold it such high regard. To close out your experience with the Garifunas, you will have an opportunity to tour the village and see the traditional huts built from natural leaves, canes, bamboo, and mud.

Upon leaving the Garifunas, you will have an opportunity to enjoy the views from Oak Ridge, once inhabited by pirates before stopping at the Buccaneer. The Buccaneer has been the center of life in the fishing village of French Harbor since opening its doors in 1967; now a restored establishment combining tourism with education and culture.

In French Harbor, you can visit many shops or stop in for some local gourmet coffee or beer and pizza. If hunger doesn't have the best of you, stroll and relax along the beautiful promenade that transmits peace and tranquility under its flowered roof. You can also jump into Splash Lagoon; a natural saltwater oasis extending into the Caribbean Sea and go for a swim or hang in the inviting hammocks at sea. A jam tasting is offered on-site.

The cost of the tour includes transportation to/from your cruise port, an English-speaking guided city tour, the visit to the Garifunas, and the stop at the Buccaneer. Food and beverages are not included in the cost of the excursion and will be at your own expense.
